Micarta

Micarta

Micarta originally owes its name to the General Electric company, where it was used as a brand name for a fiber-plastic composite. Its American inventor, George Westinghouse (1846-1914), produced laminates in this way as early as around 1910, primarily for electrical engineering products. In the meantime, there are various manufacturers of this product. Micarta refers to both a group of fabrics and a trademark of the U.S. company Norplex-Micarta.

Micarta is manufactured by joining at least two materials. A carrier material, usually linen, wood or cellulose, is combined with synthetic or phenolic resin to form a laminate. This is done under an appropriate effect of pressure and temperature and produces a high density and resistance of the final product.

Properties of Micarta

Micarta has a variety of properties. Originally, it was used in the electrical industry because it does not transmit electrical current. However, its greatest advantage over other materials is that it can be made in almost any size, color, and physical shape. It is resistant to weather conditions and UV radiation, and it also has a pronounced dimensional stability. The material does not change its dimensions due to cooling or heating. Width, height and length also remain almost completely unaffected. In this way, Micarta can be manufactured with low tolerances. It is easy to saw, grind or mill and can thus be shaped into almost any form.

Application of Micarta

Micarta is used today mainly in the manufacture of knife handles. But guitar manufacturers also like to use this composite material for various components. In addition, there are grips for special sports bows and pistols. Jewelry manufacturers are also enjoying increasing popularity with this material composite.
